Why is there something rather than nothing?

Physics has not answered it. But it has quietly and rigorously changed the question.

The old form of the question assumes "nothing" is the natural, stable state that needs no explanation, and "something" is the anomaly. Modern physics undercuts that assumption at the root: a perfect nothing appears to be impossible, not just absent.

Take the closest thing we have to empty space, the quantum vacuum. It is not empty. The uncertainty principle forbids any field from sitting at exactly zero with exactly zero change, so even in the deepest void the quantum fields retain a residual jitter, called zero-point energy, and particle-antiparticle pairs continually flicker in and out of existence. We measure the consequences directly: the Casimir effect, in which two plates in a vacuum are pushed together by the imbalance of these fluctuations, and the Lamb shift in atomic spectra. Empty space has structure and energy. "Nothing," in the ordinary sense, is not a state the universe knows how to be in.

Cosmology adds a second twist. The total energy of the universe may be close to zero. The positive energy locked in all matter can be balanced by the negative energy of gravity, the way a hill and the hole it was dug from can sum to flat ground. If that balance holds, then a universe full of galaxies may not have cost anything on net, which removes one intuitive objection: that "something" requires a vast input from "nothing."

Here is the honest limit. Physics can now describe how a something can emerge from a quantum vacuum governed by certain laws. What it cannot yet explain is why there is a vacuum with those properties, and why there are laws at all. The question has not been dissolved. It has been pushed down one floor, from "why is there anything" to "why is there a lawful vacuum that makes anything inevitable."

That is not a failure. Moving a two-thousand-year-old question onto ground where it can be studied is most of what progress ever looks like.
